Chesco Head of Emergency Services Dies

Ed Atkins lead the county department for more than 17 years.

Ed Atkins, the director of the Chester County Director Department of Emergency Services, has died, county officials said.

Atkins led the department for 17 years.

"Ed was a pioneer in guiding Chester County into a new era of 911 and emergency services," Chester County Commissioners Chairman Ryan Costello said. "His passion helped to position public safety as one of the highest-rated services available to our citizens."

Costello said that Atkins during his tenure developed the county's Public Safety Training Campus; the County’s Strategic National Stockpile program, and the implementation of the new radio communication system.

Service details were not available Tuesday morning.
